Complete Streets: Sharrows Project in Lander

In July 2024, we partnered with the City of Lander, the Wind River Inter-Tribal Department of Transportation, and our dedicated community volunteers to paint sharrows around Lander. Sharrows, short for shared lane markings, are symbols painted on the roadway to indicate that cyclists and motorists should share the lane responsibly.

What Are Sharrows?

Sharrows, short for shared lane markings, are symbols painted on the roadway to indicate that cyclists and motorists should share the lane responsibly. Unlike dedicated bike lanes, sharrows serve as a visual reminder to both parties to respect each other’s space and navigate the streets safely.

Why Sharrows Matter

Sharrows are strategically placed along designated routes throughout the Lander community, identified as preferred routes for cyclists. These markings help:

  • Promote awareness and mutual respect between drivers and cyclists.
  • Highlight the recommended positioning of cyclists within the lane to enhance visibility and reduce accidents.
  • Encourage drivers to give cyclists adequate space and avoid unnecessary hazards.

Sharrows are on Fremont, Garfield, Jefferson, Amoretti (West section), Smith (North section), Academic Way, 2nd Street, North 8th Street, and 9th Street.
